The last demo of this phase of the protest. 50 local people, including children and a samba band dressed in pink, demonstrated against the proposed Stoke Hammond and Linslade Western Bypass. They gathered at the Wing Hill roundabout and many passing motorists tooted their horns in support. Children, wearing badger masks, stood in front of mature oak trees marked for destruction to make way for the new road. The mood was enthusiastic and upbeat.
Andrew Selous, MP for South West Bedfordshire, came to hear our worries about the impact of the road and possible future housing developments on our area. He talked about local democracy and accountability, and about local people feeling disenfranchised, disempowered with a loss of control over their local environment. He was concerned about housing growth imposed from on high, rather than through locally-accountable councils.
